Jurassic Coast West Inn to Inn Walk

This is a predominantly linear hiking tour of up to a maximum of 54 miles (87 km), covering the western part of Dorset’s Jurassic Coast. It starts in Charmouth and ends at Lulworth Cove. Please visit our map page for details.

The full trail includes Weymouth and a circular walk around the "Isle" of Portland - the site of the 2012 Sailing Olympics. You can also opt for a shorter, more direct trail of between 36 and 41 miles (58 & 66 km) that leaves out the Portland circuit.

It is a simple and popular formula: you walk from one place on the trail to the next, staying in a different place each night, with your baggage transferred for you. You can choose your own dates, subject to room availability, as well as the average number of miles to walk each day, within certain limits.

About the walk

The World Heritage Jurassic Coast is both varied and spectacular. For much of the way, our trail follows the scenic South West Coast Path, which is easy in parts and moderate to strenuous in others. If you walk an average of around 12 miles (19 km) a day, you can complete the full trail in 4 to 5 walking days (without any rest days), i.e. a 5 or 6 night holiday, or complete the shorter trail in 3 or 4 days. If you prefer to walk an average of 9 miles (14.5 km) a day, you will need 6 walking days to do the full trail or 4 to 5 days for the shorter trail. You might also wish to have one or more stopovers during the course of your holiday.

You also have the option, depending on the dates you choose, to continue eastwards along our Jurassic Coast East trail from Lulworth Cove for up to 3 more walking days of around 10 to 11 miles a day as an add on holiday. The first stunning but strenuous stretch of coastline beyond Lulworth Cove is used by the army for training purposes and is only open at weekends and for a month in the summer; so the timing is important, if you are interested in this option. It is a superb trail that ends at Corfe Castle. Please be sure to provide all relevant details on the enquiry form.

Accommodation and services

The accommodation on this inn to inn walking holiday is mostly of a good standard, but the number of rooms is limited. So unfortunately we cannot accept large groups or dogs, and we strongly advise you to book early. It is, however, ideal for an active family holiday, as there are many great beaches and other attractions for children along the trail (have a look at our links page). The price of your holiday includes a full English breakfast each morning, a detailed and informative Trail Guide and baggage transfers. We will also supply you with the relevant ordnance survey maps, with the Footscape trail highlighted.
